Maybe Odin was known as something else before hand and then became Odin

something like merlin ;D i mean for real go look at odins picture as the classic wanderer. he's a wizard through and through. plus we know odin was and technically still is human. he kept his soul through shear willpower.

which is interesting because if you trace both Odin and Herne back far enough you get Wodanz...
Yeah, but Germans and Hungarians don't pull people's theories out of their sockets when they're challenged.  Ducks are known to do that.

I find your theories unlikely because:

1) This WoJ doesn't seem to fit:

Odin seems quite clearly alive.

2) We learned that Odin was the one who taught the Merlin. Now I can't for the life of me remember where we learned this but I do remember it (help guys?). Odin being a close mentor of the Merlin also explains a number of your points.

Now I'm sure you could get around both of these points in some twisty way but that just seems overcomplicated.

The "eye" references are a pretty interesting find though. Kudos on that  :).

WOOHOOO! I WAS RIGHT!  ;D.

Odin was quite clearly dead at one point, wasn't he?

Who is to say that his whole adventure hanging from the tree wasn't part of his transformation from Merlin to Odin?

Also, what Ebenezer said to Harry at CI was couched as a rumor or legend, IIRC.  Since Eb has Merlin's journals I would imagine that if Merlin said that Odin taught him that Ebenezer would have made a more definitive statement.

Odin having been a human or demi human who goes on quests to gain immortality is part of some of the older stories about him; and he wasn't the nicest guy in the world either.

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Firefly:

Quote from: Malcolm Reynolds
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of sommbitch or another.

I think that this is sort of related to the hard lessons that Harry is having to learn about morality and his own self-image.

Like everyone else, he wants to be some white hat wearing hero.

Unlike most heroes he has the ability and the willingness to do the dirty work and his world seems to need him to be that type of darker hero.

woj about him being sorta dead could be interpreted as he sorta died, like harry did. it would twing the CD conversation were odin tells him fewer try it then he thinks with a certain irony and would place him in the position of knowing about entities becoming aware of harry now, as he has experience in the matter.

The conversation between Odin and Harry was full of references to Odin's past regardless of whether Odin was once Merlin or not.

references, clue drops and a whole lot more. a fine tooth comb is needed on that conversation.
