Campaign and Character Ideas (And some art too!)
« on: December 06, 2012, 01:07:51 PM »
This is my first post here so please excuse my utter nubness. :D My husband and I are writing a campaign set in Portland, Oregon. I am not so much the writer so I am doing some illustrating while my husband does the bulk of the work (yay me!)
Since I don't have to pour over places and faces until they're ready to draw, I've been making some basic works for both the campaign and my character.

The campaign: The basic idea behind Portland is its environmental situation. It's a verdant belt of green wedged between high desert on the East and ocean on the West. This seems like an ideal story hook for lots of fae conflict. With Portland currently being dominated by Summer court. To that end I made this cover illustration for our RPG binder for this campaign: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y286/HaNeNoNe/portlandDresden1.png
This image was made with Zbrush and Photoshop. I didn't think that all summer fae should have bright colored hair, though it would make sense for some of them. This particular fae might be used as a face/contact in relation to my husband's character (who is in considerable debt to the summer court.)

My character:
My character is a wizard my with UID's namesake, Keliren. Without going into details too much about her stats (you can get a very rough outline here: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y286/HaNeNoNe/keliCharSheet-1.jpg It's still in the works so don't kill me too hard), she's a no-nonsense 50-some year old mother and sister to my husband's character. She largely prefers water magic, but also favors some lightning. Three of her wrote spells can be seen to the right of this image: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y286/HaNeNoNe/KelirenProgress.png
The 2d images to the left were drawn in Photoshop, all of the water effects are 3d models rendered into 2d images.

Tell me what you think, and if you have any art of your own I'm always happy to meet another artist. :D

I love the art.  It's something this board is missing...unless I'm not looking in the right places.

EDIT:  Oops, my bad:

Anyways, I still love it.

Nice character. I like the High Concept.

You misspelled Athletics, though. Also you don't normally need to specify what weapon you use with Weapons. And in case you didn't know, Refinement gives 2 specializations.

As for the art:

I like the character illustration a lot. But the wall picture link seems to be broken.

PS: Do you do commissions/art trades/other such things? I have an Exalted fanbook that's in need of illustration, and I've been looking for artists.

Thank you very much! Yeah, I was doing adding text via Photoshop CS3 which doesn't have a spell checker. Oops! Will correct that in the next draft. Thanks for the other suggestions too.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y286/HaNeNoNe/portlandDresden1.png Here is the corrected link (I'll edit the OP too). It's still not quite done yet, I'm not yet satisfied with the bust, the hair is a bit too dark. I need to make it more apparent this is a fae. The flowers and vines are done though.
Also, here is a shot of what it looks like in basic material: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y286/HaNeNoNe/portlandDresdenWIP-1.jpg
I'm still very new at 3d modeling, all considered. But I might try somehow to blend 2d and 3d works (as I did with the water effects.)

Edit: In regards to your question, I might be able to do some commissions or trade later on in the winter or spring, but right now I'm deep in work and classes.

Okay, I'll shoot you a message sometime in the new year.

One other thing I forgot to mention: the item rules are a little bit ambiguous. If I were your GM I'd want to look at some of those items again, but other people might have different views. Something to keep in mind in any case.

Love the artwork!
Your Laundry skill is Poor (-1), and the difficulty here is Great (+4) owing to old machines, poor lighting, and panty-stealing neighbors.  Roll the Fudge Dice, please.

Love the artwork. Especially the character work.  I haven't really done much with using 3d on my own website for our game because I am far more proficient with Photoshop than I am with 3d Studio Max.  I will have to give Zbrush a spin at some point though.  Did you do the roses with it as well as the face?

I think the concept for your campaign is very appropriate for Portland.  In my Emerald City campaign we have some similar ideas built into the background although given that the climate here is very mild (neither hot in the summer or cold in winter) we have toyed with having the missing spring or autumn courts tied to the region.  Might be something for you to consider.

There is a Heroquest sourcebook for Urban Fantasy called Nameless Streets.  It has a Portland setting and you and your husband might find some inspiration in it.  Even if you don't it is an excellent resource for anyone running a mystery type game and I can't recommend it enough.  Here is a link to it:

Love the art! Do you mind if I ask a somewhat off topic question Keliren? What font did you use on your sheet? It looks very nice and clean! I had also decided to use photoshop on my sheet but my default fonts aren't very attractive at the moment. Thanks!
