Nice, SMF was a good choice. I looked into it for a RPing community site before I stumbled on a vBulletin license.

Just a wild guess, but the uploading avatar issue is probably a permissions issue on the image directory you're writing to. I had no problem uploading avatars on a test SMF installation, but I've run into that problem with a phpBB board before.

Still, themed avatars are a pretty good idea for an author-centric site :-)

I would very much like an outright ban on images in signatures, or at least a sane height (60px?), though.....

Nope, it's not that.  The permissions check out.  I can even get stuff written to that directory when I have it download an image that's too large and resize it to size constraints, storing it locally.  It just doesn't like accepting uploads (it seems) for some reason -- even though PHP is configured to allow file uploads, and regardless of whether or not PHP is configured to run in "safe mode".  It's a stumper!

Would you accept 'donated icons' to the board? Icons fans have made, that are related to the books.  Because I've got several.  Understandable if the answer is no.

Don't mind me...I'm just testing to see if my avatar will show up.

I kinda like personal avatars, but if the general consensus (i.e., Fred decides ;D) to go with themed avatars, I'm not going to squawk.

Fred, will you accept submissions of themed avatars for addition to the "stable"?

I like the concept of themed avatars as well, although I have a couple of non-Harry ones that I typically use on message boards so I could go either way on this issue.

I notice that Fred got one not on the list, though.  ;)

I think Fred's Avatar is actually a picture of Fred.   :)

I know. My point was just that important people got to import icons of a non-Butcher variety.  ;D

Can we at least be allowed to use external avatars, for those of us with hosting?
This is not a .sig. It is a cabbage.

For now, we're gonna stick with themed avatars stored on the server, with the possibility of expanding later on so that established members can link to external avatars (though my particular part of the jury is still out on this).

The avatar I have is, indeed, of me -- I wanted the idea that the moderators of the board stood out a little to be in place.  You'll find, when they post, that Jim, Shannon, and Ashton have personal avatars as well.

I would welcome submissions of themed avatars, certainly.  I'm trying to keep them in a relatively consistent format ("Livejournal Friendly" -- 100x100, with a nested white and black border around the content), but if you don't mind me tinkering with the ones you've put together to make them fit that, I'm happy to take submissions in whatever form.

That said, I'd also prefer that you contact me by private message (there's a little icon over on the left, I think) with any submissions/requests, rather than posting to the thread, but really, get 'em to me however, and I'll put them under consideration.

Thanks, Fred, and I'll see what I can find. I don't think I ever sent you that pic of Bob, who I heisted from a luncheon table at RT in Reno a few years ago. Maybe I can catch him when his eyes are glowing.  ;D

As avatars, I've noticed Jim & Fred actually look alot alike. Hrm.

I've also noticed that in avatar form (ie, cropped), Jim looks like a Phil Pfoglio character. ;)

Trust me, it's the camera angle. :)  Tho they do look more alike since Fred dropped the electric blue hair...

Must say tho, Fred, your avatar photo is quite flattering.

Could we have a Mouse avatar?
Tough one!  I don't have any art that references Mouse just yet, but I'll make an icon if I do.
Fred, I'd really like a Mouse one as well.  :-*

Bwahaha, perfect. Mind if I gank a couple, at some point, to use as livejournal icons? I've been needing some good Dresden Files icons for a while. :D

And yeah. It would be nice at some point to allow external icons - I have a nice "geek!" icon I like using for places like this.
