Example of summoning, a step by step breakdown.
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:34:38 AM »
One of characters is an Ectomancer and wants to summon up a spectre to help in a later fight. I am a tad bamboozled by the summoning rules and was wondering if someone could go over them in a step by step breakdown. Or if you have a link to something similar
Also:
She has 48 hours
The fight should start around midnight
The place she is going to is an old factory and someone was murdered there in the 1960s and has his name form an old newspaper cutting stolen from a library.
1.   Does she have to go the summoning from her own place or can she break in and do it in the building well before the fight starts?
2.   Do focus items have to be for individual parts of the summoning ritual or are they just blanket items for summoning? (three stages)

Any help welcome, thanks!

Summoning is one of the least well defined mechanisms in DFrpg, so any truly detailed breakdown you receive on this board will almost definitely be composed significantly, if not primarily, of house rules.

In answer to your specific questions, a summoning ritual could theoretically be performed from anywhere, but doing so from the location of the target spirit's demise would almost definitely be of benefit (in the form of supplying +2 to the complexity by way of an aspect tag or invoke).

Focus items involved in a summoning ritual could take many forms.  Ritual foci for the Ectomancy thematic grouping would be the most probable for the situation you describe.  Foci from the Summoning&binding functional grouping would also be possible, but would make less sense for your specific practitioner to be bothering with as they only apply to a relatively small subset of their specialty.  Warding foci would apply to the containment of any summoned entity, but suffer from the same failing for your ectomancer's purposes as do Summoning&Binding foci, and possibly to a greater extent.

In short, not only can they be blanket items for summoning (&binding), but they can be blanket items for Ectomancy, which includes Summoning&Binding where ghosts and their ilk are concerned.
Even Chaotic Neutral individuals have to apologize sometimes. But at least we don't have to mean it.

You can find a bunch of houserules here, among them should be a summoning system that we all mostly like (or that we like bits of). Additionally you can see how we came up with that system (and a couple of different methods) right here.
