[Character Creation] How to make Daredevil?
« on: March 27, 2012, 02:03:34 PM »
When next chapter on our game starts I would love to play character based on Marvel comics Daredevil. Has anyone done anything similar or knows how I could produce similar feel? The Agility and Fighting part can be secondary (maybe Great and Good skills for those) and I can skip the club and costume - maybe name aspect for that for example. The supersenses are the hard part. Basic radar might work as aspect, and mybe [-2] Refresh cost Enchanted power suite for permission to do stuff with Alertness, with a Stunt that lets him use Alertness instead of Empathy on some assessments... I frankly have nothing coherent...

(Base Refresh 8, Skills 27 point and Cap in Great. )

Help is appreciated. :)

With blindness as an aspect that can be compelled...otherwise, I'd say make Athletics and Fists his biggest skills, along with Scholarship if you're also doing the lawyer part. Maybe Inhuman Speed and/or Strength.

That actually sounds fairly coherent to me.  :)   Apollishar's "Supernatural Sense: Echolocation" works just fine for covering his radar sense. Have an aspect for it too, so you can be compelled on and invoke it. Stunts letting you use Alertness for Empathy when in a "reading people" situation sounds perfect too.

Anything else falls into the general pool of "how do I build a melee ass-kicker"?

Supernatural Senses and a whole lot of stunts. Maybe Inhuman Speed too.

I got started on writing him up myself, but I stopped when I realized that I don't actually know much about Daredevil.

Now that I think about it, I haven't written up any characters in ages. Huh.

Honestly, there's good reasoning to give him the full suite of Inhuman Speed/Strength/Toughness/Recovery as well. In most of the comic runs he was depicted as having low superhuman levels of speed and strength especially. But that's a ton of refresh.

I'd also say that a -2 refresh Supernatural Senses suite would work well. Echolocation is the big one, but also remember that he has an extremely refined sense of touch and smell as well.

Honestly, here's what you'd need for his iconic power.

Supernatural Senses [-3]
Broad Senses: You have perfect echolocation, allowing you to function perfectly in total darkness. Your other four senses (touch, taste, hearing, smell) are also inhumanly acute, allowing you to make assessments and declarations based on subtle scent clues.

I'd strongly argue that he also has at least Inhuman Speed for another -2 refresh. I'd also allow Inhuman Strength and Toughness as well.

Most superhero Toughness/Recovery powers seem to either have a catch of Guns or of Only Against Blunt Force Trauma, which should make them quite cheap to add in.

Might as well make it the one stunt that gives you Armor:1 against blunt trauma, then.

That's not part of the powers DareDevil has, though. He's an ordinary human with superhuman senses, and that's it.

I could see giving him Speed for the dodging bonus, but for that, it would be more thematically appropriate to just write up a Stunt that does the same thing, for 1 less Refresh.

Aspects like:
Blind lawyer - (something with blind in it at least for the high concept and lots of juicy compels)
Man without fear
Hell's kitchen (or insert territory here) is mine
Only defend the innocent
Justice is blind
Judge,Jury,and executioner
self hating irish catholic
I love all women equally (Murdock is a bit of a man whore)
Nemesis to the Hand - later - Master of the Hand
Trained by Battlin'Matt Murdock
Guardian devil
Loud noises suck!

Most of those aspects and positive and negative compels/tags etc to be associated with them

could make a stunt moving: "detect lies" trapping to Alertness from Empathy.

Could just use Empathy, which Matt has plenty of and have Supernatural Senses give him a bonus to that.

Shameless plug for Sanctaphraxuseses custom power thread!

Supernatural Balance power!   Grants bonuses to balance, leaps, and fall damage reductions....i think.

I want to say make Echolocation a Stunt, but it seems like it should be an Aspect....hmmm
This is sloppy but I gotta go to work
Echolocation -3
Must have an Related Aspect
+1 Ahhh Freak Out: You're Powers can be overloaded by too loud of a noise or vibration
-1 Blinded By the Light: You're Blind, so some types of Non-Physical Attacks dont effect you, and Light/Blinding attacks dont effect you
-1 Walking on Sunshine:You can "See" In any environment (dark or bright) if their is sound or vibration to locate things
-1 Private Eyes are Watching you: if near enough to an adjoining wall you can "See" into the next room through vibrations
0 Betty Davis Eyes, the rest of the world thinks you're blind, act like it get cool sunglasses, and a cane

I have a bit of problem calling a documented ability a supernatural power...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation covers the basics, and there's a radio that explored the topic at http://www.cbc.ca/outoftheirminds/episodes/2011/08/09/episode-7---echolocation-and-thought-controlled-computing/.

That said, 1 one point stunt seems cheap.  Maybe as a "natural" power?

I think the Creature Features are a tolerable gray area, but they would require a lot of GM adjudication to differentiate between acceptable Pure Mortal-compatible "powers" and ones which are extreme enough to be considered Supernatural. Once we start getting into "mutations" then the road leads into Supernatural territory.
