Well, hands are what built basically all of our physical civilization, so I think calling someone "hand" is a compliment. Just my 2 cents. ;)

We have a very popular comic book called "el eternauta" which has an alien invasion. The aliens are called "manos" (hands) because they have hand with a lot of fingers.
