Joining the White Council
« on: September 18, 2011, 12:11:34 AM »
So the PC Sorcerer this past game ended up having to show in front of the warden Ramirez that she has mastered at least two elements with Evocation, and also used said Evocation to do most of the heavy hitting to take out a Denarian.  He then soul gazed her.

So now she's going to end up joining the White Council.  I know who she's going to be apprentaced under.  I also told the player that someone will be coming from the White Council to assess her capabilities.  How do you see this playing out?

There have been lots and lots of threads about this, just search for white council in the dfrpg section.

Bottom line:
A test to see if an applicant has what it takes to join can take any form and will depend on the one conducting the test.

As an afterthought or technicality.

She took out a Denarian.  Ramirez soulgazed her and she passed muster.  If you wanted to bring in some indirect White Council politicking at this point, now's your chance, but don't do it openly.   I think that understaffed as they are, the White Council would want all the help they can get.  They also want to control powerful evocators like your PC there.  To put on a show of divided fronts and political backstabbery right off the bat is counterproductive to their aims.  Any WC personnel who show in an official capacity should likely do so as a united front, glad to have her help but not obsequious, and proud and confident in their own abilities and organization but not snooty (this last one is hard, yes).

The goal here from a selfish, cynical perspective is to get her under the WC's thumb, and if possible, arrange it so her primary contacts are isolated to (insert backstabbery political WC faction of your choice).  That way they have time to groom her as a foot soldier/contact/loyal pawn rather than lose her to another faction.  The "nice" perspective is that they're all in this together, and they represent, for her, an unprecedented chance to learn and expand her magical knowledge all while fighting the same evils she's already been fighting.

What they absolutely do NOT want is to reject your PC and have her so turned off by the experience she runs a risk of going black hat.  Snatch her up, assess her, and kill her after you're sure she'll be a liability.  Hell, she's one of the lucky ones, you know?  Harry keeps saying how so many sorcerers don't even get noticed by the Council nowadays.

Hmmm... Let's see.  She knows Ramirez.  She knows Harry because she's been active in the Paranet.  And the player wants her to to ultimately end up studying under Rashid (sp?).

But on the other hand the local White Council wizard is one invented by another PC, who hasn't really invested in stuff like Aspects or stunts to have that wizard be the useful ally that she's been.  And I know that the players involved like plot twists and whatnot.  So I'm thinking, what if the older mentor NPC is actually connected to the "Black Council".  And the PC gets drawn into that end of things.  But it would hardly be impossible given who she knows that she could find out what's going on, and then end up helping fight against it.

In that case, I'd start with having the BC wizard start out as being helpful, but casting most of the help as being from them, and not from the WC as official (and deliberately steering the character into the bureaucracy and infighting). Meanwhile offering help that is slowly getting darker and darker grey.
