Specialization or Supernatural Sense
« on: November 30, 2010, 04:41:37 PM »
I am making a crafting specialist and one of the abilities I would like the character to have is being able to see the forces at work in items I create.  As an example I make a bow and I can tell by touch or sight the quality or the wood I’m working with before I start working.  Mainly I was looking for the quality of the materials I work with.  I would also like it to work with magic energies.  So the question is would I use a specialization like “Focused sight” given I have the sight already or would I invest in a Supernatural Sense “Strange Senses”?

Could you try and define the effect that ability should have, rules wise i mean.
Because there are a variety of possibilities.

If it simply enables you to make better enchanted items, then its probably refinement with specializations towards crafting. Narrated as what you described.

If you want to be able to see magical energies in items alone, i'd say make it a lore stunt, increasing Lore by +2 for assessments concerning magical items and materials to craft them. Since with Lore you'd be able to sense said energies already.
Though that wouldn't get you stronger items in any way.

Seeing magical energies in general would be The Sight. So i don't think you should create a substitute for that.

Adding to Tsunami's answer, I would just like to say if it is your intention to simply be able to see magic in otherwise inanimate objects as easy as you would anything else, and have that be the only application of this minor power - then yes, supernatural sense would be appropriate.
