Lovecraft and Dresdenverse
« on: October 20, 2010, 04:03:54 AM »
There is more than the occasional nod, especially when one considers the Outsiders, to the Cthulu Mythos and other stories by Lovecraft.
(click to show/hide)

I have never read any of the stories, but from summaries I believe I want to include the Nightmare Lands in the Never-never, using the concept that Lovecraft was actually a gifted savant and could traverse these realms in his sleep, and he wrote about them both as a guidebook and as a purging mechanism to face his own demons, not to mentions the few he brought back.

So aside from Nightgaunts, viper trees, Carcosa, et al, anyone got any ideas what might make some decent lovecraftian themes and threats that might be included in a submerged level game?

P.S. NyQuil is kicking in so I may be making less sense than I think I'm making...

Ghouls make appearances in both the dresdenverse and the mythos. You might also make an accidental side-trip to the plateau of Leng, the populace is somewhat "hostile natives".

I was always a fan of some of his more subtle stories (The Temple, The Music of Eric Zann, etc) but if you're looking for baddies "Pickman's Model" is a good place to look. Unless you're looking specifically for stuff from the dream cycle.

There are references from Jim about Bram Stoker and H.P. Lovecraft being killed for the same kind of thing.
Also, WoJ says the Gatekeeper took down Abdul Alhazred, which we know was a bad dude (or Lovecraft himself perhaps, Alhazred was a pseudonym of his in RL).

Well, IIRC, Word of Jim says the Lovecraft was definitely in the know. And it got him killed.  So anything that is in lovecraftian stories could absolutely appear in the DSV. In fact, it may exist somewhere in the Nevernever, or "Outside".  In fact, there is another post here about running CoC type sanity in DFRPG.

I am surprised nobody mentioned tentacled horrors. With only superficial changes, they could be turned to Shoggoths.

What makes you think they weren't already? :)

For such a campaign, you'll need a character who is an online gamer geek with the following aspect: "Make Warcraft, not Lovecraft".  Or possible a former gamer turned arcanist with the reverse of that.
