I picked up a copy at Borders yesterday, and discovered something you may want to pass on to the editor, Richelle. I dunno if there's anything they can do about it or if it was just my Borders or what.
Since I knew there was some confusion over where your book was shelved, I went to one of Borders' Find-A-Book computer stations to search for it. (That, and I didn't know Richelle's last name.
You mean they don't alphabetize books by an author's first name?!) I searched by title, and did find the book... but the computer listed it as "Not yet published".
I went to the shelf, and sure enough there was one copy left. Picked it up, took it to the Information desk.
Me: Hi. There's a new book out, Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead?
Her: *typetypetype* It's not yet published, I'm sorry. Would you like to pre-order?
Me: *holds up book* No, I'll just take this copy.
Her: *looks at book, looks at computer, brain freezes*
Sure, I could've just told her, but I wanted to go for the dramatic impact of it all. She said she'd talk to the manager about it. I don't know how this is affecting sales (presumably it's only a problem if someone is searching for it like I was, shelf-browsers wouldn't have this problem), but it might be affecting their ability to order your book.
I haven't had time to start it yet (archaeology test today, also a presentation and paper on Barbara A. Biesecker's Rethinking the Rhetorical Situation... hell, even I'm asleep now), but I did crack it open in the parking lot while waiting for Outback to open. Next thing I knew, it was fifteen minutes later. So that bodes well!
