fun names for a troll
« on: July 29, 2010, 05:52:01 PM »
in my urban fantasy book the Fremont troll in seattle is actually a real live troll. but he is not the big nasty mean kind of troll that harasses goats on bridges, no he is a rather pleasant fellow who kinda likes to pretend to be nasty but is not very good at it.

i wanted to give him a name that would be utterly ridicules for a troll, like Fred or bob or ted or something like that. any suggestions.
In the darkest hour i shall be there.

i'd think it would depend on how you want his character to be, and his background.

really a nice guy with proper manners? yeah, i'd go for reginald, cornelius, etc. maybe his parents are like that, idk.

if you're going for a more generic, all around nice guy, you could name him, yeah, fred, bob, ted, tom, john, etc...

Winston Thurgood Marshall, Esquire. (Winny for short?)

Bilbo or Beowulf. (For irony's sake)

Tristain, Chad, Laurence, Shayne.

IMO make his real name something mean and vicious, but the nickname from that name harmless. For example:

My real name is Montreglesh, but I like to go by Monty for short.

"Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology." - Niven
"Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced." - Neurovore
"Sufficiently advanced technology my ass" - Dresden

If that's the case, then he needs a real posh British accent and invites the character over for tea and crumpets with preserves.

Monty: Hello there chap! I'd love to have you over for dinner.
Bridge crosser: You want to eat me for dinner?
Monty: Oh heavens no! I'm a second hand vegetarian!
Bridge crosser: Second hand?
Monty: Why yes! Of course? I only eat vegetarians, my dear boy.
Bridge crosser: Oh, good. I'm an avid meat eater.
Monty: We could have a spot of tea as well. I do hope you like Earl Grey. He drank a lot of tea. He should be absolutely delectable!
