I kept thinking Dark City. It would be a pretty good mood one for people considering playing a mortal who is just figuring out that something is NOT RIGHT about the world as they knew it. The ending doesn't do much for what you'd be aiming for but the rest is pretty good stuff. Dark Water could also fill the same role, depends on whether you want more of a ghost story feel or a fantasy feel to your darkly inspirational films.

Scary vamp movies that aren't slasher fests are a bit difficult to come by. "The Gates" tv show maybe? Even contains a bonus succubus and pack of part-time hairy people.

I can't think of anything that shows the fae the way you'd want them in a Dresden Files game.

TV Shows
Dark Shadows
American Gothic
The Night Stalker
Tales From the Crypt
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits
Tales from the Darkside
Bewitched
Supernatural (that is a given)
"The Gathering" (2007) Miniseries

Movies (a good majority of the films I would recommend have been mentioned)
Bell Book and Candle (1958)
Cast a Deadly Spell (1991) <I know it is mentioned to death, Jim Butcher's inspiration for Dresden Files but it is linked to the film below>
Witch Hunt (1994) <sequel to Cast a Deadly Spell>
Ghost Rider (2007)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
The Orphanage (2007)
Hellboy 1 & 2
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
Any Classic Hammer Film

I could think of others but this is a good start.

I remember seeing Witch Hunt on HBO when I was rather young - I think it's what really started me loving the whole idea of Modern Fantasy.

The actors in Witch Hunt are a lot better than what i've seen from To Cast a Deadly Spell....

Speaking of which, does anyone know where one can FIND those two movies?  it's infuriating.

By no means am I recommending that people resort to this, but I feel the compulsion to point out that there IS a copy of Cast a Deadly Spell running around off of The Pirate Bay right now.

A Ghost Hunters adaptation where instead of Joe Average going in to solve a possible haunting, it's a group of mages one of which is like a Morty Lindquist kind of character.  If they find something...shi...err ectoplasm tends to get real.

Has anybody mentioned The Ninth Gate? Antique books with a ritual encoded in a series of wood-block prints. Great game fodder.

That's what I get for skimming the thread. Oh well, still a great movie for inspiration.
