The Spoilers Section - The Poll
« on: November 10, 2009, 08:48:37 PM »
This is slightly in response to:

The very small minority could be the two or three vocal people who are dominating a discussion thread with disproportionately excessive posting.  No guarantee it ain't you who's wanting the special treatment, in other words.

SO, One poster, One vote. Do you think there's a problem?

Why are you assuming it has to be heartbreaking ?

That's a hell of a dichotomy you've laid out there. What of folks who think it's neither? :)

Yeah, you might want to edit the choices.  Instead of yes no I'd try civil not civil.  Maybe a third, There's a problem but it's not listed here as a choice.  I've got an opinion on that, but it's not very constructive so I won't go there....

If you answer yes or no, the way the sentence is laid out, it could mean Yes to both, or no to both - So I'll wait till that's sorted...

Reminds me of some conversations I have had before.

"Are you ready to go or do you need a few more minutes?"

"Yes"

"Yes you are ready to go or yes you need a few more minutes?"

"Yes"

Or there's always this oldie:

Attorney A:  Please answer the question with either yes or no.

Attorney B:  Objection, the question is not answerable by a simple yes or no.

Attorney A:  Any question can be answered with a simple yes or no!

Attorney B:  Really?  Have you stopped beating your wife yet?

Attorney A:  *chokes*

I voted "yes" - meaning the board is usually civil.

May I suggest that when you fix the poll you clear it as well, in case some people that voted were confused? Also the questions seems to be pretty loaded, you may wish to work on some more objective options. I am sure there are some people that may find the spoiler section to be uncivil but don't find it to be "equivalent to Jerry Springer".

thanks

edit *and I'm sure if you are having trouble with thinking up other options people on here would be willing to help you*

Plus, the poll itself is rather untenable.

As Katty said, many people who find the board to be an unpleasant place would never sign up, stop posting and disappear, or delete their accounts.  It would make sense that the people who've stuck around enjoy the atmosphere there.  Not many people would stand up in a place they are going to be attacked and try to change it.

Or they just love the books enough to stick around the forums and know which threads/posters to avoid.

After a while, yes.  You are absolutely right.  Though I honestly wonder how many people stick around long enough to figure it out.

Or they learn that some sections are closed off to them because any opinion might be "challenged" in ways they might not be comfortable with. Some folks (me included) need an "off button" or a "water Spray" to the face occasionally.

So for me at least - spoilers is off limits.

I don't have any real problems with the Spoilers section myself.  A few threads get out of hand or become difficult to post in but it doesn't happen terribly often, and in those cases I just wait for them to cool down and go elsewhere for awhile.  And it's really the only way I have to discuss the books at all.  (I have a couple friends who read them but aren't really the book discussion type).
