DFRPG Fate Dice?

Fred, can you say what dice mechanic will be used for the RPG?
Fate Dice like in SOTC ( +/ /- ) or something else?

It may seem a silly question, but with Starblazers Adventures using d6-d6, I just wanted to be sure.

Honestly, we're probably going to be agnostic on dice mechanic. Fudge dice are our default, but you could use Starblazer dice instead and it won't break anything.

But no, I wanted fate dice to be used! I just ordered $20 of Fate dice just for the DFRPG!
A bit premature maybe, but like Harry has found out over the books, it pays to be prepared!

Custom dice -- which these would be, since each face is not a '1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6' -- that cover all faces are *pricey*. We don't have plans to do custom dice right out the gate.

Another point of order is that over on the Starblazer forums there had been some experimenting with 4FD vs. d6-d6 and the former does have a significantly lower average results total from the latter.

Given the somewhat cinamatic themes of the Dresdenverse (yes, I'm using that term cuz' I is a geek) it seems that d6-d6 would give a greater chance of success or failure due to even a +1 to a check is a big deal using the FATE system.

It will be interesting to run this with both dice sets and see the results first hand.

If anyone can't find Fudge dice but has access to a computer with a dice roller, 4dF is statistically identical to 4d3-8.

For what it's worth, the LEGO company recently released some board games with customizable d6s (picture courtesy of Brickshelf). These, I figure, will when they finally arrive in the US, be perfect for making Fudge dice out of - and hey, it combines LEGO and Dresden into the same activity. How cool is that?

Maybe there could be a pre-order system. Figure out the base cost of these dice, take people's money in advance with the notion that none will be made until there are a certain number pre-ordered, and then it would be a limited supply kind of thing.

Since we're looking for + + _ _ - - and really only need two symbols (one for + and one for -) maybe something arcane like a pentagram for the + and a skull for the -.

Depending upon the cost, I could see ordering a dozen or more of these. I have 2 packages of FUDGE dice with at total of 40 dice (5 colors of 4 dice each per pack) and would easily be interested in 3-4 sets of 4 dice for my players.

The problem with custom dice isn't the number of symbols affected, it's the number of sides.  Fudge dice have nonstandard symbology (even blank counts) on all six sides -- if you went to try to get a custom die done like that with, say, Chessex, you'd find yourself paying several bucks *per die*.

It's also, from a small publishing house perspective, a bit of a distraction to be running down a dice order when you could be using that same chunk of time getting a book out.

I seem to recall feeling like their dice were very, very pretty -- but felt a little light and small in the hand compared to what I'm used to with Fudge Dice.
