Your Episode Ideas Here
« on: December 16, 2006, 06:25:43 PM »
This is a podcast by the people, for the people.  What sorts of things do you want to see us do with the Butcher Block?  Let me know!

An interview with Jim, naturally  :).  Maybe when it's nearly time for White Night's publication, he could read a passage from it?

Also, Jim hasn't had much time lately for his LJ writing blog.  Maybe he could talk a little about writing sometimes?

Interviews with the stars of The Dresden Files tv series.  The director.  The caterer  ;D

A preview of the RPG?
I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.

I'd like a segment on examining an aspect of Harry's world.

Explaining vampires and the "rules" that seperate them from the stereotypical ones one week then what Outsiders are next one.

That sort of thing.

A creature corner.

Great ideas, guys.  Keep 'em coming.

And as far as interviewing Jim goes: that's a given.  Probably multiple times.  If I'm lucky, I'll get an interview set up to talk about the TV show with Jim within the first few episodes of the podcast.

Speaking of interviews, I wonder if there's any way you can swing an interview with Marsters around the time the fourth audio book comes out.  Or the Buzzy gals!  And if Robert has the time, I imagine he'd be open to an interview, as well.  That's the cool thing about podcasts!  Phone interviews are so much easier to wrangle than the in-person variety.

To be perfectly geeky, I'd like to extend the format of the show to something more like half an hour if you can manage something like that.

Instead of asking for very difficult to obtain interviews, I wouldn't mind also if you just did a set of reviews and discussions of the books (one perhaps per episode) with many dividing half the time amongst the Dresden Files and also his new series.

Honestly, I just love podcasts that shoot the breeze and the like.  Perhaps you can invite friends over to co-host or otherwise add fun to the story discussion.

Yep -- I'm expecting more of the episodes to be in the 20-30 minute range than the 6-minute range.  I don't want to go much *longer* though.  I've been listening to a lot of podcasts lately, and it's hard to stay current on the ones that are hour-plus in length -- so to an extent, I want to produce a podcast that's of a length I *wouldn't* have a hard time keeping up with.

I'm definitely planning on doing some "as I read 'em" conversations about the books -- the Dresden Files series in particular, since I need to do another reread of all of the material in order to properly examine the sources for the RPG.

Absolutely.  It's not going to be a solo show all the time.

Random stories FROM Jim, like he gives at cons...like about his sensei, or the pokemon dare that lead to the Fury books, or a conversation between him & Shannon about Shannon's car asking her to buy things....

Actually, some Shannon input on her book may be good around publication time. I know it's a JIM podcast, but...

A question and answer thing may be good, too, where you ask people to send in questions, Jim answers them. (Or answers questions for the boards. I'm assuming the whole audience of the podcasts will not consist of people from the boards.)

Not just interviews with Jim, but with Shannon when her book is coming out, TV show folks when the show is released, RPG folks, and other authors that Jim likes.

I'm certain CE Murphy would be willing to get involved...
But MAYBE Lasciel will try to tempt Harry with the prospect of redeeming HER.
Wouldn't *that* be a powerful scene?

I'm a friend of C. E. Murphy's as well -- good idea.

Interview ideas....which I'm sure have already occured to you, but just putting them down:

Robert (Wolfe).
Jim's agent, maybe?
Simkin.
Various cast members, if you can get them...especially, of course, Blackthorne and Mann.
James Marsters and the girls at Buzzy, if you can swing it.

Yeah, I'd love to make those happen.  I think the podcast may need a little momentum first, a few episodes under its belt.

Also: I'd actually love to get *you* on the line at some point (maybe other forum members over time) to make for some fun "fan chats" about whatever's on our minds.  Maybe we can work something out, there.

Oooo!

I'd definitely tune in for one that featured someone from the Donald Maass Literary Agency... Mr. Maass has some *damn* fine books on writing technique out there (I own two, and have made a point to have them in my store where I recommend and sell them regularly).  To say nothing of the other wonderful subjects they could discuss, I'd simply love to hear a discussion of "Writing The Breakout Novel" in terms of Jim Butcher's works in specific...

I believe Jim wrote Storm Front *before* having an agent, but despite that, I've always thought the Dresden Files are textbook examples of the advice Donald Maass gives to new authors in his book and workbook.  I'd also LOVE to hear Jim weigh in on how Maassively his writing has been influenced by his experiences with the agency.   ;D

I'm definitely planning on doing a "how did Jim get published?" episode, given the frequency of the questions he gets asked about it.
